Behavioral Changes

You may notice changes in a loved one or in yourself. These can be caused by natural progressions of the aging process, illness or injury. Professional help in the home is available and may be covered by your Medicare home care benefit.

The behavioral changes noted below may occur because of a decline in either physical or cognitive ability or a combination of both. They do indicate the need for medical intervention and understanding. When speaking to your doctor, ask about RN, Physical or Occupational Therapist, Medical Social Worker home visits you may benefit from to help restore your regular routine or improve current abilities. If eligible, these services are covered by your Medicare home care benefit.

 

Warning Signs Causes to Consider
Change in personal hygiene and wearing stained clothing. -poor balance (bathing) and decreased physical strength (laundry)
Change in socializing (isolation), fewer invites or refusing contact -memory impairment, depression, fear of driving, getting lost
Change in housekeeping routine- more clutter, dirt, bugs -poor vision, poor balance, decreased strength, depression
Change in sleep patterns- waking up or not getting out of bed – bladder problems, anxiety, depression, illness
Change in weight/eating habits (not eating, buying prepared foods) -illness, memory loss or confusion, difficulty shopping & cooking
Change in cognitive abilities- forgetful, repetitive speech, confusion ie: skipping medication, Dr. appointments, burnt pots, missed bills -depression, physical illness or injury, onset of dementia
Change in behavior- aggressive, angry, defensive, passive -covering memory lapses, frustration, confusion, illness, injury,
Change in physical ability, coordination, strength, falling, incontinence -unsteady gait, balance problem, poor vision, illness, injury
Change in mood or personality -depression, anxiety, physical problems, confusion, illness
