What is Low Vision?
Low vision is a loss of eyesight that makes everyday tasks difficult. A person with low vision may find it difficult, if not impossible, to accomplish such activities as reading, writing, driving, shopping and watching TV. Vision cannot be corrected with regular eyeglasses, medicine or surgery.
People with low vision need help learning how to make the most of their remaining vision in order to keep their independence.
Some causes of low vision:
- Macular degeneration
- Diabetes
- Glaucoma
- Retinitis pigmentosa and congenital
- Neurologic
What can be done to help?
Vision rehabilitation can help people with low vision compensate much as rehab helps with stroke, arthritis and heart disease. You can learn new strategies to compensate for loss of activities of daily living.
